'France Telecom' Suicides

This page should be considered as a stack of index cards. There will be repetitions in text until the first edit.

Before you begin reading: One of the hardest to understand and accept things about this phenomenon is that it cannot be consciously experienced. Because of the way your brain functions subliminally to detect threat-movement the conscious mind is unaware any thing is happening.

This problem is a part of your every day life. A low level of exposure is normal for everyone and harmless. Trouble begins when you create a situation that allows massive exposure in a compact time frame. This may be several hours each day for a week or more. See the Introduction on the Home page for examples.

It has not occurred to anyone that the reasons for a suicide left in suicide notes, letters, and explained by suicide survivors does not rise to a level that should have led to suicide. Something else is at work.

Typical psychosocial arguments are given. No one in the company is aware of a simple problem capable of causing a mental break.

One comment by a survivor was that he began to hallucinate his own suicide.  That's an indication he was having Subliminal Distraction exposure.

In the last twenty months there have been twenty five suicides of employees of 'France Telecom,' the privatized communication company. Articles on line suggest that pressure is being put on "civil servant" hold over employees, from when the government ran the company, that cannot be fired to force them to move on.

There are suicide attempt survivors and others who blame heavy handed management practices for the deaths.

Management has announced a freeze on any additional changes but the suicides have not stopped. That's a good indicator it's not a psychosocial problem.

So far I have found only two videos that show conditions inside the company. Both video segments have  modern low wall workstations and lines of terminals side by side with no protection against Subliminal Distraction exposure. The modern low wall workstations are round tables without protection if someone were to walk by them. They would block peripheral  vision detection of movement from the neighbor worker but little else.

The first views of the modern workstations is at frame count 141/42. The second video frames are at count 223/25.

There is no evidence of how the workstations of suicides were arranged.   That must be investigated to confirm Subliminal Distraction caused the suicides. But look at the first frames of the work floor at 141/42. The man sitting at  the desk in the foreground is in the peripheral vision of both workers sitting at the round four person worktable to his left. That's a design mistake. He should be behind one of them or separated by a moveable wall instead of to their side.  Even a dark semi opaque glass positioned between the desk and workstation would block Subliminal Distraction for the two workers on the left.

In this case the worker at the desk also has the two workers to his left in his peripheral vision. That's a total of three people who are exposed by the same design mistake.

This is a frame grab of frames at count 141/42. Both the workers at the four person table workstation, cut off the picture on the left, and the worker at the desk can have Subliminal Distraction exposure with just the right slight head turn. This is a design error. There is no indication of why the design mistake is there. Was the original installation faulty or did someone add the open desk later?

This type Systems Furniture should be used for light computer work such as a salesman's desk. It is not designed for long  hours sitting while engaging deep mental investment to use a computer. It would be used where there are no workers walking around in the room.


This four person table workstation shown at count 223/25 has protection from subliminally detecting the movement of the neighbor worker but little else. It it not clear what the white box is just to the left of the monitor. Any thing that moves or light that blinks must be below the work surface. If that is the computer CPU it should not be there.


This might not be enough protection if there are people walking in the room  while the computers are being used.

This type workstation might be used for years with no problem. Then a difference in job duties or personnel changes alter the traffic pattern around it and the worker using it begins to have Subliminal Distraction exposure and symptoms.


In this frame grab you can see terminals lined up side by side to cause Subliminal Distraction exposure if they are manned for long periods.


Once your brain learns the behavior of the failed peripheral vision reflex, exposure is cumulative. The primitive brain system that functions subliminally at a level below thought, reason, and consciousness to attempt a vision reflex cannot determine there has been more than one location.

These side by side terminals are used everywhere from NASA, and military control rooms, to school computer labs.


These two workers in the left frame are subliminally detecting each other's movement when that movement is large enough. Just the movement of fingers on a keyboard would not be detectable at that distance. Since there is no mention of mental breaks sitting at terminals one must conclude that the workers don't use these positions for many hours and many days consecutively.


The question to be asked concerning the suicides is where did they work and did that location have Subliminal Distraction exposure?

This harmless appearing use of a computer is problematic if there are family members or pets who walk by this user.

Remember there must be something that is detectable moving in peripheral vision to cause a peripheral vision reflex attempt. Nothing would happen in this picture if there is never that movement. But computer users do this without thinking. The subliminal functioning of the brain system that detects threat-movement cannot be detected. If there were exposure here the victim would blame stress, poor management practices, or any other typical psychosocial reason for their hallucinations and suicidal thoughts.

The symptoms would not happen with a single exposure incident. Massive exposure is required. There are other workstation pictures on this site connected to mass school shootings and apparent video game and Internet addiction.

The traffic pattern in the room determines if there will be enough exposure. Here, we don't know if there will be through traffic. But there can be additional exposure at home that would add to the total exosure that leads to a mental break and suicide.


In my own family situation we put the computer at the end of a room divider so that the whole family walked by the computer user. I have personal experience with the phenomena.


The Everquest Connection page was one of the first three pages on this project back in 2002. Sony was accused of putting script in the video game Everquest to make it addictive. Overlooking the fact that it is not possible Entertainment Tonight aired a story with video of Tommy Stein's computer location. He put it beside an aquarium with a single large fish. As he played the game movement of that fish was subliminally detected to cause Subliminal Distraction exposure. Tommy began to behave bizarrely and was sent away to school. He recovered. But Shawn Woolley an adult living alone committed suicide sitting at his computer with the opening screen for Everquest on the monitor. Pictures of Woolley's workstation are not available. One picture of him at age thirteen or so showed he put the CPU tower on top of the desk beside the monitor then. A blinking light swept through peripheral vision with a head turn can substitute for threat-movement.

Tommy is turned slightly for video but when he used the computer the tank  would have been in peripheral vision so close he could reach out and touch it with his right hand






The fish is long gone. An email from Ben Stein confirmed there was a single huge fish in the aquarium when Tommy Stein had trouble with the Sony video game Everquest.




This picture was released by the Finnish National Police. It shows that Pekka-Eric Auvinen could detect his reflection in the closet door mirror as threat-movement in peripheral vision.  He planned, joined a shooting club, bought a gun, then killed eight before committing suicide in Jokela Finland. This has not happened in the French suicide cases but it is only a matter of 'Subliminal Distraction meets sociopath' to have it happen.

There is circumstantial evidence that the Virginia Tech shooting was caused when Seung-Hui Cho used the suite common room to study and use his laptop. Two of his roommates gave interviews in which they said he ignored them as they walked by him entering and leaving the dorm suite.  They did not  understand they were witnessing Subliminal Distraction exposure. Virginia Tech has responded to two letters with promises to investigate. But as late as last month another student, a cadet, disappeared in the middle of the night and was found wandering along a country road seven hours later.

If you were an academic with a high position in education would you investigate something that showed your mistake cost thirty three lives?



The Redlake school shooting incident and the Atlanta Day Trader murders also have this evidence.



Mark Barton had exposure with these incorrectly positioned terminals but he also set up a computer in his Stockbridge Georgia apartment living room.

That means he had exposure at two locations so that the total accumulated exposure caused the mental event and shooting.

The first thing police who entered the apartment saw was the computer with a suicide note on it. His wife and two children would have walked around him as he surfed the internet for stock market information. One news story remarked that the children complained they couldn't  use the phone because he stayed on the computer so long. He killed his wife and children with a hammer then shot twenty one people at two day trading companies killing nine of them before committing suicide when surrounded six hours later .

Un-attributed Fear

This note, left on his computer, was the first thing police saw when they entered the Stockbridge apartment of Mark Barton.

"July 29, 1999

6:38 am

To whom it may concern,

...I'm so sorry. I wish I didn't. Words cannot tell the agony.

Why did I ? I have been dying since October. To wake up at night so afraid, so terrified that I couldn't be that afraid while awake. It has taken its toll. I have come to hate this life in this system of things. I have come to have no hope...

I don't plan to live very much longer, just long enough to kill as many of the people that greedily sought my destruction.
