This site is about a conflict of human physiology that shaped history but was undetected  until the 1960's.

In the entire history of man on the planet Earth this phenomenon was discovered only once.

It caused mental breaks for office workers.

You will find this material hard to believe.

This phenomenon is explained in first semester psychology lectures where students don't believe it either.

For that reason I wrote a demonstration that will allow you to experience the phenomenon.

The Everquest Connection page has the explanation and assumes you have not taken basic psychology.

The solution for this problem was the office Cubicle.

This site argues that the this phenomenon causes College Suicides and Missing Students.

The phenomenon causes mental events around the world, Chaco Canyon.

If you use computers in unprotected workspace such as homes, dorms, student apartments, and small business offices read  ...Prevention... at the bottom of most pages.

Cubicle Level Protection in the Military

Too-close side-by-side seating in all cockpits copies the engineering/design problem discovered to cause mental breaks for knowledge workers in the 1960's.

When the crew  interacts during flights nothing happens. But when one person enters a state of private concentration a normal feature of all human physiology will attempt to break that concentration if movement is detected and  mistaken for threat movement.

How does that mistake happen? The system is a warn first identify second system. Peripheral Vision Reflexes are formed below thought, reason, and consciousness. Think of the last time you were startled. It happened so fast there was no time for thinking. All detected movement will be mistaken for threat movement if it meets the criterion of being close and appearing to approach from behind.

We have all learned to ignore reflexes when the situations where the detection of movement in peripheral vision is not a threat to us. But we can't turn the system off.

The sudden intense startle will stop but the movement is still detected and your brain still attempts to force the normal reflex. The subject is not aware anything is happening until the break happens.

If the exposure is intense as in a hospital ICU the episode is temporary. But if exposure is low as in Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga altered mental states and bizarre thinking can be outcomes.

If either pilot or copilot enters a mental state of private concentration they can ssubliminally detect the movements of the adjacent pilot.

The third crewmember has no one in his peripheral vision.

All the rules for signal delectability apply. Humans see by reflected light. There must be sufficient light, the movement must be vigorous, the subject must have normal peripheral vision. In some situations such as hospital intensive care units a mental state of apprehension may heighten awareness and make detection more likely.  But the subject must enter a state of slight dissociation for events around them for the stimulus to cause exposure to Subliminal Distraction.

In this first picture that is NOT the case. But when either pilot enters a private state of concentration and dissociation they have created the "special circumstances."

How long does it take to cause a mental event? The mental break in ICU units can happen in as little as five days. One in three ICU patients who spend more than five days in the ICU has a mental break. Lower levels of threat detection will take longer to manifest a mental event.

Using the examples of Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga you can see other possible outcomes. Both exercises produce first psychotic episodes that resolve with no treatment when the exposure is intense in a short time frame. Low but persistent exposure will produce an altered mental state with impossible beliefs. Kundalini Yoga Gurus begin to believe they can levitate, walk through solid objects, dematerialize at will or read your mind and control your actions through mental telepathy.

In airplane pilots this might translate to a belief that the plane can perform unusual feats. (See the Czar 52 Crash page.)

Only long daylight flights would have the potential to cause exposure from  SD. Night flights in a darkened cockpit do not have enough light to detect "threat movement."

A hand passing in front of a lighted screen could be detected.

Note that while the light level is low there is absolutely no Cubicle Level Protection for these air controllers. Why doesn't this cause a problem? There are few staff who walk around in the room. This picture may have been taken with a slow shutter speed to make the wall displays show up. The apparent level of level of ambient light may not be a true representation.  The control positions are spaced apart. If Subliminal Distraction did cause symptoms they would be written off as stress.

In fighter aircraft several things prevent exposure. There is no co-pilot moving in peripheral vision. The tinted visor prevents reflections on the cockpit bubble being detected as threat movement.

But reflections appear in the same locations no matter what the attitude of the plane is. It is possible for them to be detected in rare situations. A turn of the head would make them appear to approach from behind.

If something does happen to cause a crash, it will be written off as pilot error or spatial disorientation.

Only the A10 Warthog has a source of movement mounted in a position to be detected if certain maneuvers are taken.

The altimeter appears at eye level in both photos and a compass is located on the other side of the HUD screen.

Note that the pilot's line of site to the HUD screen is between the compass and altimeter,

Here the HUD screen is the rectangular tinted glass in the center of the pilot's forward view.

The compass is the small box on the pilot's right in this photo. The upper right corner of the HUD screen appears on top of it.

The altimeter is hidden in the same position on the pilot's left.

Exposure need not happen in aircraft. Something as simple as reading a newspaper can allow exposure if it is done in a location where others are moving in peripheral vision.

Note that one person is sitting where there can be no movement from behind and the other has potential exposure possibility.

There is no traffic of other personnel to cause exposure in this case. But something this simple, seating position preferences, can be the reason one person has a mental breakdown when others in almost the same situation do not.

Total accumulated exposure in a compact time frame eventually reaches each person's threshold of exposure and a mental event happens.

The nature of that mental event is determined by several factors. In addition, like Culture Bound Syndromes, each person understands what is happening to them differently.

Nightwalking

"In The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary swordsman of 16th century Japan, implies that he fought his greatest duels with his eyes crossed, and goes into considerable detail about developing and using this strange abitlity."

The method suggested to engage peripheral vision is to suspend an object from the bill of a baseball cap and practice staring at it rather than looking straight ahead as we all normally do.

The site has a page on the physiology of the eye and sight. It describes the normal field of vision.

The first paragraph on this page refers to psychological factors effecting pupil dilation.

"Interestingly, the pupil/iris combination also changes in response to psychological factors. One sign of activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is a system important in arousal, fight, and flight, is dilated pupils. For example, sexual interest results in pupil dilation. (This piece of information may come in handy some time.)"

Prevention:  This  section is now repeated at the bottom of most pages.

The rare occurrence of the injury establishes that is difficult to create enough exposure to cause an injury. But when it does happen the consequences are serious, possibly fatal.

Our personal experience was intermittent human traffic during eight-hour workdays for thirty calendar days.

If you have a tower CPU mount it under your desk. That's the way they position it in a cubicle. The hard drive busy light is about the height of your low peripheral vision if you put the tower on the desk. Desktop reading of text or writing notes beside the keyboard on the side of the monitor away from the tower makes the blinking hard drive busy light appear to approach from behind when you turn to view the screen again.

If you have a computer work station/desk in which you turn ninety degrees to write or do other non computer work, turn off the monitor when you turn aside. Remove screen savers in this instance. The movement, animation for example, in your screensaver, two-dimensional movement, might well be detected by your peripheral vision at close range. Alternately cover the monitor screen.

All home, apartment, or dorm computer workstations are in unprotected workspace. To change that put the computer in a quiet room with no possible movement. If that is not possible in a dorm or apartment position the computer so that your peripheral vision can see only stationary walls as you use the computer in a busy room. In Cubicles and 'Systems Furniture' these protective features are achieved with peripheral vision blocking panels and corner seating positions. It is called 'Cubicle Level Protection.'

If you use computer or CD-ROM games for many hours day after day, the game playing position should follow the same rules as the computer workstation. Battery operated games will not run long enough on a single rechargeable battery to cause a risk for SPVP.

Although a laptop does not have a visible blinking light in peripheral vision the same rules apply to your work position.  There should not be human traffic moving to you from behind. There should be nothing behind you, which could enter your subliminal peripheral vision field as you turn your head while working at the laptop and be mistaken for threat movement.

Only movement coming from behind you into your Subliminal Peripheral Vision can cause a peripheral vision reflex. If the movement source approaches you from ahead then enters your Subliminal Peripheral Vision from conscious sight there can be no peripheral vision reflex.

Repeated for Emphasis:

A single session or rare sessions will not cause this problem.

It is the same day after day long hours of play or computer use with detectable movement in ‘Subliminal Peripheral Vision,’ which would form the basis of a risk for SPVP injury.

Exposure can be cumulative

The brain’s detection system only evaluates movement. There is little recognition of the nature of the object in peripheral vision. If you have several hours exposure from human traffic at the library, while reading at an open table or seated in a reading room chair, followed by long hours watching TV with a critically misplaced ceiling fan sweeping detectable shadows around the room, the combination of those two behaviors might cause the problem. The suggestion is that either activity alone would not consume enough exposure time even if the critical movement is present.
